I am attempting to scan an old grayscale magazine ad, which includes photos
and text. It's destination is a 300dpi .pdf file, which should, when
printed on a B&W laser printer, reproduce the ad faithfully. I am having
trouble finding the right settings or technique for scanning that avoids
unwanted dot patterns (the real term escapes me, sorry) in the photos. Can
anyone suggest a "best practice" for this sort of thing? I am using an
all-in-one Brother MFC7820N and either it's own utility or Photoshop for
scanning. Thanks!

The term is Moiré.

Wayne Fulton can help you out.

Basically you use the De-screen function in the scanner software.
