Save the file as a PDF before you send it.

What version of Word?
Because I believe Word 2003 has built-in OCR so you can scan directly from
Word and acheive character recognition rather than scanning and then
"sending" to word.

This is normal when scanning a document to a word processor. A scanner can
create an image of the original document, period. A second step can be
applied - translating the image to editable text using OCR aka "optical
character recognition." The quality of these results can vary as some OCR
packages are better than others. Since the text is editable, you can go on
from the initial results -- matching fonts, arranging layout, editing text,
etc -- within the word processor program.

If you need an exact copy of the document, just do a plain scan and skip
the OCR process.

It is a bit of a project, but you can scan to a PDF file.
Adobe Elements 2 can open PDF files as photo files, which
you can edit using the text tools. Then save the file again
as a PDF and send it.

Or spend about $600 for Adobe's full Acrobat program.
