I have just one box of some color slides my father took in the 60's and
70's. Any advice on how to get these digitized without having to buy a
scanner? I don't have the negatives. What kind of service bureau
(online or otherwise) should I look for that might be able to do this?

Don't have the negatives? That's pretty funny. The film you see in the
middle of the slide is the film that came out of the camera. Slide film
develops as a positive image. They cut it off the roll and mount it in a
slide.

I have several slide scanners around the house, but all have SCSI ports. All
my scanners are supported by Vuescan so that's no problem. What part of the
country are you in?

If you're in the US and not that concerned with the quality, the local
Wal-Mart will scan slides to CD for $ .75 each (with a minimum of 12) +
$3.00 for the CD.

Get Mac McDonald to scan them for you. I went the other route and purchased my
own scanner - *extremely* time-consuming...and now I have a $1,800 piece of
equipment that I hardly ever use anymore.

Better to have somebody else do it. I tried a service, but was not happy with
the results. Somebody like Mac, OTOH, can give it the professional's
touch...as opposed to entrusting your slides to somebody working for minimum
wage...
