....so are you having a scanner problem or display adaptor (video) problem?
The HP ScanJet 3400 is supported inbox in XP. I'm not sure what kind of
problems you are having, so here is what I recommend: Disconnect the device
from your computer. Uninstall any HP software for this device and then
reboot your computer. After you've logged in, plug in your scanner to the
computer. The OS should detect the device and install the inbox WIA driver.
If you don't want the inbox WIA driver and do want the HP software solution,
from here, go to the Device Manager and disable or uninstall the inbox
driver. Then follow instructions that came with your scanner.
