Are there any reasonably price scanners that work in Windows Vista?

My Mustek BearPaw 1200CU has been a great scanner, and only cost $40 new.
Unfortunately, Mustek won't even acknowledge that Vista exists.

Canon has some nice multi-purpose unit - SCAN, COPY, PRINT - that work
well with Vista. At least THIS one does. I have seen them for as
little as $40 at Fry's - some refurbished.

Noozer,

You may be able to find a driver for your scanner that works in Vista. I've
found two sites that include Vista drivers for hardware not supported by the
manufacturers of that hardware. Here is a site that has many free drivers.
You need to search to determine whether the site has a driver for your
scanner:

Here is a site that has drivers for many scanners, but you have to buy it:

http://www.hamrick.com

Again, you need to determine whether you scanner is supported.

I have HP printer I got for 100 from Walmart a few years back it scans, copy
and print after upgrade to vista home premium .This is with out any update to
the printer. It is HP PSC 1210v all in one. the last time I cheked it is about
$75.

All,

OK, here's the deal on the free scanner driver software I downloaded from
www.radarsync: It worked well with my HP 2200c scanner, but there's a catch.

The image the software makes includes $ signs that will be removed when you
pay $40. The free scanner software is the same as that offered by ViewScan
(http://www.hamrick.com). ; It's actually the trial version of the ViewScan
software.

I've no problem with that, so I paid the $40. After doing that, I ran the
same image through the scanner. The $ signs were gone. OK, what do you want
for nothing.

My old scanner now works with Vista and it only cost $40. I'm happy.

Mustek BearPaw 1200CU

Have a look at this Mustek page:

http://www.mustek.com.tw/Download/driv_scanr/english/b1200cu.html

TWAIN Driver
and Panel

It says this is a TWAIN driver set for your scanner.

I am using my very old HP SJ5P scanner under VISTA as I did under XP
and W2K before it by installing old HP software and using the TWAIN
connection.

If you do this make sure that there is no leftover Mustek software for
that scanner installed by checking Add/Remove Programs.

Here are their installation instructions but check out everything on
that page for the XP installation:

Model Name: BearPaw 1200CU

Download Instructions:

1. If you have not install the software from your original CD,
please download the full software package (including the Generic
Scanning Module, the Twain Driver and the Panel) or the scanner will
not work.
If you have already installed the driver software, please
install the Twain driver and the Panel.

2. If you are using Netscape Navigator, please move your cursor over
the Download icon, then press the right button of your mouse and select
"Save As ..." to download the driver software.

3. You can save all software to the same directory. Then run each
installer after the download is complete.

4. If the installer asks you to Insert New Disk, please refer to
help.

So find the files you downloaded -- XPDriver.EXE & b1200cuv13.EXE [NOTE
the Download ALL ]-- right mouse click on the XPDriver.exe file and
select Compatibility. Set Compatibility to XP with SP2 and then check
the box [ x ] Run as Administrator. Then repeat that for the
b1200cuv13.exe file.

NOTE -- if you have an XP CD for your scanner you may be able to use
that -- look for the file that starts the installation (do not let
autoplay start it) which might be setup.exe and do the Compatibility
and Run as Administrator on that.

After installing and then connecting your scanner you should find that
you can scan from the Mustek software and maybe from some applications
but that the Print & Fax, if you have it, does not work; nor does any
other scaninstruction that is part of VISTA itself.

I'm perfectly happy with that with my old scanner that I mostly use as
a copier but you may decide that this is the time to buy a new scanner!

Let us know what happens.

The hardware driver installs in Vista without any problems. Scanner looks
fine in the device manager.

The TWAIN software refuses to install. Is the TWAIN component necessary to
scan? Any idea how I can test the scanner without the TWAIN panel installed?

Have you tried doing this in compatibility mode as Administrator? That is why
I suggested it.

TWAIN is a protocol for communicating between device and system. VISTA has
it's own protocols or uses a different more uptodate than TWAIN one. If VISTA
does not work then as I said TWAIN did work for me and for others who have
posted here.

Up to you whether you try it or not.

If part of the package has installed I would recommend you to start afresh
after uninstalling anything that Mustek may have installed.

I've tried pretty much everything. I even tried to get a before/after
snapshot of an XP system to see what files were installed and did the same
in Vista. No joy there.

The scanner didn't show up in My Computer. Not sure what apps come with
Vista that can talk to a scanner.

I'm going to format a spare drive and do a clean Vista install and go from
there.

That's not the answer to my specific question.
Not sure what apps come with Vista that can talk to a scanner.

Under your circumstances probably none -- which is why installing the
scanner manufacturer's TWAIN compatible application and the TWAIN
drivers may enable you to use the scanner from that specific
application.

If you want an installation that works completely with VISTA then you
need to buy a new scanner and even there I would wait a while until I
was certain that both VISTA and the scanner were compatible.

I don't know if you'll find one for $40 but check the Canon Website,
crosscheck models of interest for prices on the web, you can usually get
Canon scanners through Amazon, just be sure there are Vista Compatible
drivers at the Canon website and be sure they are still supporting the model
you choose. At Amazon, there are usually user reviews and if anyone is
having trouble with a specific model with Vista, it probably would show up
there.
