I experienced sort of the same thing when upgrading to
XP Professional. I was installing an HP R80 All-in-one
and found the printer part worked but attemping to scan
would cause all sorts of problems. I corrected the
situation by doing the normal printer install and then
did a separate scanner install via the Printers and Faxes
portion that lists "Scanners and Cameras" under "Other
Places". When you are all said and done, you will see
your printer connected to an LPT port and the scanner
hooked up to a DOT4_001 port. Hope that helps...
