Scanner sensitivity off?

My office is using Ariel to scan books with a new Fujitsu 5750c
scanner. The sensitivity seems very high; the flat parts of the book
scan well while the elevated parts toward the binding can barely be
seen. Any advice for how to turn this down? (There is a Threshold
setting, can someone explain that? It's set at 128).

You will have to flatten the book pages onto the scanner glass to help
the raised portion.

128 Threshold means (in line art mode) that gray tones from 128 to 255
will be pure white, and gray tones from 0 to 127 will be pure black.
Clean type in originals should be fine at 128. Threshold is the
adjustable "border" between what will be white and what will be black
(in line art).

If the text characters come out wide and fuzzy (like from newspapers),
you can lower threshold some, like maybe to 85 or 90, to thin and clean
the characters, for better appearance.

If the characters are too thin (faded ink in originals perhaps), you can
raise the threshold to widen and darken the text.
