I have an Epson CX 5200 printer/scanner. I would like to scan and print
photographs. The program allows me to set scanner resolution from 50 to
9,600, with the default at 300.

What is the minimum resolution for scanning color photographs? Higher
resolutions seem to take a lot of time.

Higher resolution creates a larger jpg file which when printed say at
4x6 has more fidelity to the original photo. If you are scanning for
web, you can use less resolution since displays are about 100 dpi or so.
You need to try a photo at varying resolutions and then pick the one(s)
that look fine in the destination medium. Google: "scanning basics" for
a large number of scanning guides.

Scanning an image is dependent on WHY you want to scan.

So If I plan on scanning a photo to print later, I decide what SIZE I want
to print. So IF I take a 4 x 6 inch photo and want to print it at 8 x 12
then I have to understand that printing will be BEST at 300 DPI per printed
size

here are the number

4 inches times 300 will give you 1200 dpi

If you took that 1200 dpi and tried to print at 8 inches then the print
will more then likely not look good so

scan the image at 600 dpi which should give you a better print.

Ultimately, the image print dpi will not be much better if scanned more
then 300 dpi per inch

For displaying on the web, 72 dpi per inch is all you need. Everything else
is not needed.

Take a look at http://www.scantips.com/
Scroll down until you get to "Scanning 101" and you should find the
answers to your questions, including the ones you haven't thought of yet.

300dpi. But it really depends on the size of the photograph, quality of
the photograph, whether or not it is for web use, archival, printouts, etc.
