i need to scan nothing but documents, mostly letter and legal size
papers.
i would like to covert these documents into pdf files, then email
them.

is there a scanner that will allow me to perform the above tasks
without having to use a software?
i would like to be able to control the scanner directly, without the
need of a computer.

speed is not too important.
i will be scanning no more than 50 pages a day.

also i would like the price to be around 1000 dollars.

thank you in advance....

You do not have to make a PDF file to email documents. You can send an image
(picture).

No. It is software and hardware that talks with the scanner to create an
image.

It takes software to create the PDF from the Image of the document.
If you want the PDF to be searchable, you also need a program for Optical
Character Recognition (OCR).

Not an option.
The only thing I know is a Multifunction unit (scanner and printer in one)
that can make copies.

Scanners that can scan documents start at around $50.00, most are around
$100.
OCR programs that can make PDF files are $100 to $300, depending on where
you buy the software.
A computer to drive all of the equipment can be had for about $500. Watch
the ads on TV for Dell computers.
Or just go to Dell's TV ad:
http://www.dell.com/tv

So $100 + $100 + $500 = $700....well under $1000.
Throw in a printer for $50-$300 and you have spend $1000.

Learning to use everything....priceless.

hi csm1 , thanks for your advice.
in my case, i would like to be able to scanner documents quickly (and
PDF format is a must).
so i dont'want to have to turn on the computer just for the purpose of
scanning documents.

my sister's office has a scanner that works just like a copy machine.
you feed the documents to the machine. instead of printing out another
copy, it will email the copy to an internet address.
this makes scanning really fast and convinient. but the price for that
machine is too high.

i am hoping to be able to find a machine that can do the above for
around 1K.

fujitsu 4120 has a 'send' button but i am not sure if that sends
button allows you to send documents via email or send documents to pc
application.

thanks again.

Maybe find out the brand and model of the scanner in your sisters office and
see if that company makes a machine for less that will do what you want.

Search the internet with google for the functions that you want in a
scanner.
