I have a rather old Nikon LS-40 that seemed quite good when "newer"
but now I have a difficult time getting a decent scan. The highlights,
in particular, get blown out.... smeering over into shadow areas. Of
course, most of the slides I'm trying to scan are really old too, some
over 40 years old! so the problem might be the slides....

But I also tried scanning the same slides on my Epson 3170 Photo
scanner, and some actually look better than on the Nikon; however lack
of ICE on the old slides make using the Epson a real chore.

I usually use Vuescan, but find that the Epson software seems to give
me better color on old slides.

So, I'm thinking to either find some place to recondition the Nikon
(probably needs a good cleaning), or replace the 3170 with something
better. I'm looking now at an Epson V600. Price seems very reasonable,
and it claims to provide ICE. Resolution isn't really a problem....
scanning slide and negatives at 2900 ppi on the Nikon gives me all the
resolution I want.

Is that a reasonable decision? Can I expect much better performance
from the V600 over the 3170? Can I expect the performance to approach
that of the LS-40 when it was new? Anyone know someone who works of
the LS-40?

I'd really appreciate any comments and suggestions. BTW, I also looked
at the V700, but don't think I can justify that cost.

Everything is what it is because it got that way....D'Arcy

You need to take it apart and clean the mirror. Be careful
since this is a first surface mirror and easily scratched.
After awhile something must outgas inside and fogs the
mirror. Cleaning the lens is more difficult but needed for a
total restoral. The lens is more difficult to access and may
not be worth all of the disassembly needed.

Thanks David....

I did a search on cleaning a LS-40 and came up with some instructions
and pictures, so I think I'll give it a try.

I had the older nikon scanner LS?? 35mm and the dirty mirror, that did
the same thing.

What we have now is the cleaning fluid and swab cloth used to clean the
sensor of digital SLR cameras gives a clean and lint free surface on the
mirror. The fluid dries without leaving a residue.

Don't use cotton buds or tissues they will scratch the mirror.

Rob,

Where can one find such items?

Charles, go Epson v700/750. I have this and it is very good. Batch scans up
to 24 slides at a time etc and has Digital Ice. I also have the Nikon
LS4000Ed the Digital ice is better on the Nikon
