L.S.

Have two system. Both running XP with all updates.

One has a Epson Perfection 1660 Photo scanner and the other has a Microtek
Scanmaker 5800. D/l both drivers off net.

When I go to CP-Scanners & Cameras the Epson shows up as 'Epson Perfection
1660' but the Microtek shows as 'USB2.0 scanner #2'. Both show 'image
scanner' under Type. Both are USB.

If I go to Device Manager the same thing shows up.

Is there a reason this is happening?
Both are working ok. I'm just trying to figure out what's happening.

learn answer.)

Thanks.
As I stated, everything is working fine. I was actually more curious than
anything.

Probably having to do with the specifics of how the mfg wrote the drivers.
The Epson drive was evidently written specifically for that device...while
the Microtek appears to be using a more generic version.

I agree whole-heartedly. I've had 3 or 4 Microtek scanners starting back
with Win95, and they all installed as either a "Generic Scanner" or under a
different name, never Microtek.

Scanners have more or less a fairly standard interface, either WIA or TWAIN.
Most scanners will operate with relatively generic drivers which I would
suggest is what the Microtek is doing. Epson, on the other hand, have
provided a driver specifically crafted for their scanner which may exploit
some of that model's extra features.

My Microtek full bed Scanmaker X12 USL has both a USB and SCSI connectors.
I use the SCSI connecton. It shows up as a Microtek Scanmaker X12. I
haven't tried the USB 2.0 connection. So, I'm guessing its something
specifc regarding the USB drivers for it while on USB.

Thanks to all. Lesson learned.
