I have over 1000 slides from the 70's that I'd like to scan to my pc. I don't want to spend a lot of money, but do want good quality pictures. Any suggestions on what type of scanner to buy? Thanks in advance.

A film scanner.

Flatbed scanners are not good to use with 35mm Slides. The focus is critical
with 35mm slides and flatbed scanners do not focus on the film plane.

A good place to get an idea of the film scanners and price range available.

A film scanner with ICE or FARE is good to have for dirty and scratched
slides and film.

I did the same and bought an Epson 4180, rated best in all reviews. I
bought mine from futurepowerpc.com for $219.00 ($250.00 list) and got an
additional $50.00 rebate from Epson. I am very satisfied and would
recommend this scanner. The included software is not user friendly and
has a poor design but it does do the job. Vuescan is probably much
better but I do not want to spend the money in that area.

I scanned in over 200 slides using my Epson 4180 flatbed scanner. I do
not doubt that a film scanner will give better results but the end
product I got with the Epson was more than good enough. I personally
did not feel the additional money was worth the marginal results.
