Scanner Install Problem

After a complete system re-install (XP Pro) I'm left with one problem i.e.
cannot install the scanner - gives message re: *hardware not installed
properly* etc.
I've downloaded the latest drivers from HP but the problem persists.
I thought of uninstalling [ via Device Manager] and starting from scratch
but even this fails -
message =

* Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the
computer*

[which is obviously nonsense]

Any ideas please.............

Return to the HP site and check with their tech support.
 
After reinstalling windows did you update Windows? There is a USB
update that is required for some USB 1.1 & 2.0 devices to work.
 
I too have XP Pro that, after reinstallation, won't recognize my HP
Scanjet 5370c. It takes all the SW, the connection lights up on the USB
hub, but the scanner has become an alien, a UFO. This all came about
after trying to install (unsuccessfully) a DVD-recording program.
Everything else--printer, portable hard drive, ScanDisk, computer
camera--work fine. Please send any help possible.

For me , the key is that XP thinks that this device is required for booting.
If I colud get around that I'm sure the rest would be simple - this device
worked perfectly well on the previous system and the only reason for the
system re-install was because of a major HDD failure, but this HDD was
replaced by an _absolutely_ similar one.
[ BTW I've tried a previously posted suggestion re: *Update* but I'd done
that straight after the original system re-install]
