Suddenly I can't scan. My scanner, an HP5200C, no longer appears in
Device Manager, not even with an exclamation mark, and Scanners in
Control panel is blank. Using instructions from the HP site, I
uninstalled and reinstalled the software and, presumably the scanner,
but nothing has changed.

Any suggestions?

Does the device manager have a device called Unknown Device or similar
under the "other Devices" category ( ? Icon ).

Normally a USB cable works loose or goes bad and connectivity is lost.
Recheck your USB data cable connections and make sure you are getting power
to the scanner.

The only unknown/uninstalled "Other Device" is a PCI Multimedia device.
That's not the scanner, is it?

Right, I thought that might be the problem, so I did check the USB
connection. No luck. By the way, I notice that HP lamp and ctfmon are
running. Does that mean anything?

Pessimists remain morose precisely because they are so right too often.

I'm using Windows 98, Second Edition. Should I try installing the
scanner to my laptop, where I run Windows 2000?

I would do this even if it's just to verify the scanner and cabling are in
good order. If it works on the W2K system, then the W9x drivers would
appear to be the problem on your current system.

No luck. The scanner doesn't work on the W2K machine either. I'll buy
another USB cable and try that, just in case. Stay tuned...

Perhaps, because W98SE does not know what to do with it. Was it there
when the HP was working?
Remove it from Device Manager, unplug the scanner's USB cable, restart
Windows, cancel the <found new hardware> process, then go to |Control
Panel | Add/Remove Hardware | Uninstall/Unplug... | Uninstall | <SpcBar>
box Show Hidden Devices, then scroll to the bottom of the devices window.
Select that last entry then <PgUp> until you find any or multiple entries
for the scanner. Cursor to that entry, | next | yes | finish |. Restart.
Repeat until all the HP entries are gone. [this is so tedious!] While
you are in there, do you find devices you no longer use? Make them go away
the same way. Reload the HP sw before replugging the USB cable.

Theo

Reboot... Then reload etc...

Theo,
I was not able to follow your instructions because of the following:
1) The scanner does not appear in Device Manager.
2) The computer does not go through the "found new hardware" process.
3) My version of Windows 98 only has Add New Hardware. There's nothing
about uninstalling hardware or about hidden devices.
Any ideas about what I should do now? Basically, I have uninstalled the
software numerous times, including related files as explained in
instructions on the HP site. Then I reinstall the software, turn off the
machine, plug in the scanner, connect the USB cable and turn on the
machine.
Am I doing something wrong or is the scanner dead?

Tried a new cable. Same story. Do you think the scanner is dead? Is
there some test I can run to find that out?

Hi...

Win 98 has the ability to remove hardware... like this.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System
Device Manager(click View devices by type).

Highlight the device in question (right click opens a
box with several options, one of which is remove.

It *may* be worth your while to boot into safe mode
before doing this, as in safe mode you'll see not only
more devices, hidden devices, and perhaps more importantly
multiple entries of the same device.

Good luck, and take care.

Since your not able to connect the scanner in neither a Win9x nor a W2K
system, it certainly is likely there is a problem with the scanner. In
either situation, you have connected the USB directly to the computer port
and not to a hub have you? USB scanners don't fare well when connected
through a hub.

My $0.02.

If this is a scanner with an external power supply, I'd suspect that.

This recently occured with my father-in-law's HP scanner, I forget
which model. I didn't have a voltmeter to check the power supply,
but I took a chance and got a replacement at Radio Schlock --
and that did the trick.

Are there any signs of life at all from the scanner?
