Scanner doesn't work with switchbox?

A parallel scanner I picked up will work when connected directly to the
computer but not if I route it via a switchbox so that my backup system
can also have access to the scanner.

The direct cord is 6' long and the cords going to the switchbox are only
2' long each so there is actually less cable when the switchbox is used
but it still doesn't work.

Why is this happening and is there any way to fix this problem; short of
getting another scanner?

Thanks...

I did this maybe 8 or 9 years ago, and it used to work fine, though I used
to have to power on the scanner first and make sure the switchbox was on the
correct setting before turning on the PC. Other than that its just a case
of making sure all the cables are correctly (and fully) wired, and that the
switch was also fully wired.

I have a Scanjet 5370C which was bought with both parallel and USB
connections. The parallel usage was with my old WIN 95 machine, but I
intended to replace that with a WIN XP machine. On transferring I too found
that I could not use the scanner on a parallel switch box. HP said this was
not possible (no reason given, though). It now works [mostly, when in the
mood] through the USB connection.
