Scanner causes problems finding hard drives

I installed a Scanjet 7400C by hot connecting it. After
installation, it worked perfectly as far as I could
tell. I used the copy utility and got a good copy on my
USB printer. However, when I restarted by PC, the
presence of the scanner on the USB port causes the system
to spend 5 to 10 minutes searching for the hard drives.
I disconnected the scanner (PC power off) and rebooted,
and everything is okay again. I'd really like to be able
to use the scanner, but this problem makes it painful.

I don't know the answer, but here are several suggestions...

Leave the scanner on at all times, including times when the PC is off.

Try turning on the scanner only when needed, then off.

If neither suggestion is suitable, press the Windows key (the one with the
flag) and the PAUSE key simultaneously. Click the HARDWARE tab, then
DEVICE MGR. Locate the scanner, right-click it and DISABLE. When you
want to use it, ENABLE.

you are not alone, I've heard of this issue before.

If I remember correctly, try this:

unplug scanner, reboot.

then shutdown.

attach scanner, turn back on, let XP redetect it.

do a google for "XP scanner problem"
do the same in MS KB (use Help and Support Center when attached to the
net).
