Hi
The scanner and camera wizard is missing... is there anyway to reinstall it?

It has vanished from the Programs menu and when I plug in my camera,
although the computer audibly recognizes something has been plugged in, the
camera does not show up in My Computer, nor does the Scanner and Camera
Wizard start up. The camera is a Sony Cybershot... works fine on all other
computers in house.

Turn the camera or scanner ON (power up) and see if it picks it up.
My camera and scanner will not show either until I turn them on.

Try this tip from Steve Winograd...

First client's computer with XP SP 2: The Scanner and Camera Wizard
didn't run automatically when she connected her digital camera.
Solution: disable the Real Player update scheduler in Msconfig and kill
the running process.
-----

There are several ways to start the Scanner and Camera Wizard.

To start the Scanner and Camera Wizard.
1. Open a Pictures folder, like My Pictures.
2. In the left pane, click Get pictures from camera or scanner.
3. The Welcome to the Scanner and Camera Wizard page opens.

If the WIA service is disabled or not running or if your scanner or camera
is not connected to the computer and turned on, you will not see the Get
pictures from camera or scanner option.

Make sure that the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service is not
disabled...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) |
Set it to Manual under Startup type | Click Apply | Click OK |
Close services

You can also start the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) |
Click the Start button | Click OK | Close services

To start the Scanner and Camera Wizard.
1. Open Control Panel
2. Click Printers and Other Hardware
3. Click Scanners and Cameras
4. Double-click the icon for your scanner or camera.
5. The Welcome to the Scanner and Camera Wizard page opens.

If the WIA service is disabled or not running or if your scanner or camera
is not connected to the computer and turned on, you will not see your
scanner or camera in the Scanners and Cameras folder.

To start the Scanner and Camera Wizard.
1. Open My Computer
2. Double click your scanner or camera.
3. The Welcome to the Scanner and Camera Wizard page opens.

If the WIA service is disabled or not running or if your scanner or camera
is not connected to the computer and turned on, you will not see your
scanner or camera in My Computer.

To start the Scanner and Camera Wizard.
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: wiaacmgr in the box and Click OK
4. The Welcome to the Scanner and Camera Wizard page opens.

If the WIA service is disabled or not running or if your scanner or camera
is not connected to the computer and turned on, you will get this error
message...
---------------------------
Scanner and Camera Wizard
---------------------------
The computer cannot detect the scanner or camera.

Please make sure the device is turned on and is properly connected to the
computer. If the computer still cannot detect the device, open Control
Panel, click Scanners and Cameras, and then click Add Device.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

wiaacmgr.exe is the Windows Picture Acquisition Wizard.

wiaacmgr.exe live in these two folders...
C:\WINDOWS\system32
and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

A scanner will work perfectly well with a program like Paper Port with the
WIA service not running.

Hi
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I do not have RealPlayer installed
(according to many other posts out there this is the culprit... ahh I should
be so lucky).

The WIA was set to Manual, so I stopped it and started it again, but still
no go.

I tried going directly to the My Pictures folder, but Get Pictures... is not
an option. Yes, my camera is plugged in and turned on. :)

I tried everything you suggested below but to no avail.

Looking at this further, when I plug in my camera and turn it on, Windows
detects the device and says it is ready to use, but it is NOT showing up in
MY COMPUTER. When I click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon near the clock, I
can select "Safely Remove Sony DSC" but there is no drive letter associated
with it.

This is not a brand new camera nor a brand new computer. Other than windows
updates, I have not added or removed anything from my system recently.

I tried plugging in a 512MB flash drive directly into the USB port and I get
the same result (hardware is ready to use, but no drive letter is assigned).
I've tried other USB ports - makes no difference. I have a 20GB (DATASTOR)
external drive and it works fine - shows up as a drive letter and I get a
dialog box asking what I want to do - Play, Copy pictures..., View a
slideshow, Print Pictures, Open... etc. So I know the ports/cables are
working.

I've tried the flash drive and camera on another computer and they both work
fine.

I also downloaded and tried that AutoFix, but the only drive letters that
show are C (hard drive) and D (CD drive), it can't fix E if it can't find it.

open to suggestions.

Laurie,

You have exhausted my for sure deals. ;-)

What exactly happens when you..
Start | Run | Type: wiaacmgr | Click OK?

What kind of error do you get?

It sounds like WIA is not running or somehow fouled up. I know, you said it
was running.

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) is the Display name. stisvc is the Service
Name for WIA.

Open a command prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
Then type:

sc query stisvc

and hit your Enter key.

Should look something like:
------

C:\>sc query stisvc

SERVICE_NAME: stisvc
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,ACCEPTS_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0
------

STATE : 4 RUNNING means it's running.

I have a scanner, no camera, when I plug the scanner in and start the WIA
service, the scanner shows up under Scanners and Cameras in My Computer. No
drive letter. Though that may be because a scanner doesn't have storage
like a camera does.

Is the Plug and Play service running? Probably, the Safely Remove Hardware
works. Have a look in Services anyway.
I also downloaded and tried that AutoFix

This?

Hi Wesley

When I do Start | Run | wiaacmgr and click OK, I get the error message
"The computer cannot detect the scanner or camera. Please make sure the
device is turned on and is properly connected to the computer. if the
computer still cannot detect the device, open Control Panel, click Scanners,
and then click Add Device." (and yes, the camera is plugged in and turned on)
I've tried adding the device, but my device is not listed (Sony DSC-P7) and
I don't have anything to install. I tried this feature again with the Flash
drive (SanDisk mini Cruzer), now this device WAS listed, I selected it and it
said the device was working properly. I just can't SEE it anywhere.

I had a few mapped drives, but I disconnected them after reading a post that
sometimes when a mapped drive letter is a low letter, sometimes PnP devices
will not get picked up... but that didn't work either.

I have restarted my machine several times during all this to make sure the
settings are actually taking effect.

I tried "sc query stisvc" like you said and the response is EXACTLY the same
as yours.

I initially thought the problem was the Scanner and Camera Wizard just not
running, but the device is not showing up in My Computer.

Yes, the AutoPlay fix is the one you listed. it can't see the drive letter,
so it can't fix anything.

The Plug and Play services are set to Automatic. When I open it up I can't
Stop or Start the service though as those options are greyed out. I did,
however, change it to Disabled, hit Apply, and then changed it back to
Automatic.

If you think of anything else, please, by all means, let me know. I am so
frustrated with this. I have to have access to these devices (camera and
flash drive).

Hi Laurie,
I've tried adding the device, but my device is not listed
(Sony DSC-P7) and I don't have anything to install.

Don't know whether this applies as you stated earlier that it used to work.

<quote>
SUMMARY
If you use the Add Scanner and Camera Wizard to determine whether Windows XP
has a driver for a Plug and Play scanner or camera, no devices are listed.
Only non-Plug and Play devices are listed in the Scanner and Camera Wizard.

MORE INFORMATION
The Plug and Play device information is stored in .inf files, and these
drivers are installed automatically when Plug and Play detects them. If you
do not see your device in the list, check with the manufacturer for the
availability of a WIA driver.

Hi Wesley
I found a WIA driver for my camera good for 98/2000/XP/ME, but still didn't
help.

I FINALLY figured out the problem.

I somehow had a DAEMON TOOLS system file (not the only one using this
machine).

You must delete the file "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\SPTD.SYS"

Stumbled upon this site and it was the only thing I hadn't tried.

http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?s=3d07236d09c724475c45fcdaeecccdfa&t=8213&page=2

I have spent an entire day and a half troubleshooting this problem. It first
started out the the wizard would not start when I plugged in a device, but
upon further investigation, I realized that the drive letter was not showing
in My Computer either. (I could see it in Disk Management, but could not open
it). Anyway, for anyone else that is having USB recognition problems. This
might be the answer for you too.

LOL

DAEMON TOOLS is apparently for circumventing copy protections. I guess
someone had to pay the piper. Have you chewed out the other user(s) yet?

Glad you got it fixed, Laurie. :-)
