I'm using XP Pro SP2. Anyone know a good program which will allow me to
scan and save documents in editable form? (Word, Excel, pdf, etc.) Thanks
in advance.

Readiris Pro came with my HP scanjet 8200 and does a good job of scanning to
Word, pdf, bmp, png, txt and some other formats.

Check to see if your scanner came with a OCR program. WordScan is another
good one.

How about the programs which come with the scanner?
What you need is a program to acquire the scan and then an OCR program to
convert the image to text.

I can't say about a spreadsheet. However, the current version of
Wordperfect can create a pdf file. Word probably can as well; I don't have
the latest version of Word.
There are lots and lots of programs for this task.

I've used PaperPort for years. It's user friendly and the OCR capabilities
are about 90% if you have a clean copy you're scanning. I'm at version 9,
but I'm sure the later versions are even better.

You need OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. Note these
three points:

1. Most scanners come with OCR software, usually at least a "light"
version of some standard package.

2. There are a number of different OCR programs available. Among the
most highly-regarded are Abbey Fine Reader and OmniPage.

3. No OCR program is perfect. How accurate it is depends on the
quality of the paper you start with and what font(s) it uses. You can
often get accuracy rates in the high 90 percent range, but it's always
important to realize that the results are never perfect, so careful
proofreading of what it produces is important.

I currently use OmniPage SE 2.0. It's an oldish light version that
came with my scanner. There are better products available now, but
this works satisfactorily for my limited needs.
