Hi,

Until a few days ago, HP PrecisionScan Pro 3.06 worked fine with my Scanjet
7400C. All of a sudden, the HP software can no longer access the scanner:

"Sorry, Scanner Could Not Be Initialized"
Code error 07 on the scanner.

Please note that the scanner works fine when used from another non HP
software. For example, I can use it from the Offfice scanning software. So
this is *not* a hardware or driver problem.

Any idea would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Needless to say that I have already tried all the actions recommended by HP
: re-installing the software, the drivers, etc.

Well, it seems that uninstalling and re-installing the softare was not
enough. As usual with HP software, the registry is not properly cleaned up
when you uninstall their software. I did this manually and re-installed the
software which fixed the problem.

There is a PrecisionScan Pro 3.13. It can be downloaded as the software
for the HP 5470C scanner. Don't know if that version will work with
other HP scanners or not. Filename SJ668en.exe.

By the way, as I use other scanning software, including later HP
software and Epson software, I find that no other scanning software is
even close to PrecisionScan Pro.

Hi Barry,

I have noticed this but if this version was compatible with older scanners
like the 7400c, I think that HP would propose it in the download page of the
7400c, which is not the case. But I'll ask.

Yes, I have read negative comments about HP Director and HP Solution Center.
I just had a look a VueScan. Althouth the user interface is a little bit
rough, it seems to have at least as much features as PrecisionScan Pro.

Re: "But I'll ask."

Trying it will likely give you a better answer than "asking". In part
because you won't really be asking the people who know.

:-) Now that version 3.02 is working again after I uninstalled, cleaned up
the registry and re-installed, I'm not sure I'll make the risky decision of
installing version 3.13 just to "get the answer". Remember that the
installation package comes as a whole and that you can't separate the
installation of HP PrecisionScan Pro from the driver installation. At least,
this is how version 3.02 is installed.

I have posted a question about version 3.13 and the "old" scanners on the HP
Scanners forum. Usually, people from HP answer (when they have time :-)) ).

Correct. The problem appeared again without any obvious reason and I tried
version 3.13. Same problem. No way to fix it.

Solution: I dumped the HP software alltogether and I installed VueScan.
Works like a charm.
