Scandisk utility is absent from the Systems Tools menu -
is there another way to access this or similar?

Scandisk has been replaced by Error Checking. Look for Error Checking in the
Help and Support Center.

Go to My Computer, right-click on your hard drive and choose Tools. You can access error checking there.

Scandisk is sorely missed; neither "error checking" nor ChkDsk are
suitable replacements as neither offers the user control over what is
fixed. But if NTFS, that's all you can use.

In particular, I found "error checking" seems to do nothing at all -
passing several FAT16 and FAT32 volumes as OK when a Scandisk done
immediately thereafter found screeds of logic errors.

MS really has neglected disk maintenance in NT.
