windows XP does a "scandisk" checking errors and repair
at startup..which is great, but takes forever...very,
very slow..like hours...is there a way to change settings
on this trouble shooting, but necessary part of the
program. In the older systems you could set it at normal
or thorough, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Actually, it's called Checkdisk... although it is intended to scan the disk
for errors.

Are you saying it runs every time you boot?

If so, are you *sure* you have set it to FIX the errors it finds? If not,
it will run every time, and not fix the errors.

With other programs closed.....
1) From My Computer, rightclick on the drive in questions, and select
Properties.
2) Click the Tools tab, then click the "Check Now" button in the Error
Checking section. Make sure to click the box (put a check mark) in the
"Automatically fix file system errors". You may wish to uncheck the bad
sector scan... it will really slow the process down -- which may be what you
are experiencing.

You should always do a Checkdisk first, but periodically, you should also do
a Defrag.
It can dramatically improve overall performance of your system, with regard
to file handling. Defragging DOES take a long time... but is worth the
wait.

Both of these tools can be scheduled to run... say, while you sleep. But do
not schedule them at the same time, or too close together. (Of course). Put
"Schedule a new task" in the search field of "Help and Support", and click
the link on the left, to learn more about that - if you haven't been there
yet.

Good luck,
