when booting the computer the computer boots running
scandisk. how to stop it

Sounds like a serious file system problem. I would boot to recovery console
and run chkdsk. To do this boot from Windows 2000 CD, choose repair, choose
recovery console, choose OS and enter password. When at a C prompt run
chkdsk /r which is the thorough chkdsk. If it can make it all the way
through then type exit to reboot. If it doesn't make it all the way through
then you have a drive problem.
