I used to use Scandisk and then Defrag with older Win versions. What has
replaced Scandisk?

Click>start\my computer and then right click on your drive
(usually C:) and then click properties and then tools. You
can find these in the windows\system32 folder if you want
to create shortcuts for you desktop. The System32 folder
may not show unless you have enabled "show hidden files
and folders" in control panel\folder options\view tab-
hidden files and folders section. There is also a show
super hidden tweak for the registry that you can do. Have
fun.

Greetings --

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the
WinNT/2K OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk,"
which performs much better, as it's not burdened with presenting a
pretty picture of moving blocks of color while it's working.

Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.
