Is the Scandisk function in Win XP? If so, where do I
find it? Thanks !

No, Scandisk is not in XP. It has a similar program though. You can access
"check disk" (chkdsk) several different ways. Here's one way:

Right click on a drive icon in My Computer; select Properties. Click the
"Check Now..." button on the Tools page. Check the desired boxes. Click OK.
If Windows will tell you that it cannot check the disk at the moment, say
"yes" to running chkdsk at the next startup. Restart the computer to allow
the tool to run.

Or you can run it from a command line window: Start> Run. Type in cmd and
click OK. At the blinking cursor in the window that appears, type chkdsk /?
A syntax list with available switches will appear. Read the descriptions.
Compose the command line that you want to use and press Enter to run.
(Again may be prompted to restart for the tool to run).

More nonsense from Andrew E., our resident supplier of misinformation. True,
there is no scandisk, but the disk cleanup utility is a completely different
function and *not* a substitute for it.

Neither Windows XP nor any other version of Windows NT has scandisk. The XP
equivalent is called chkdsk. Enter chkdsk at the Start | Run line.

Indeed _there_ is, but it's called CHKDSK not SCANDISK.

To the OP: open a command prompt and type "CHKDSK /?" (no quotes).

XP has chkdsk which runs in command line mode.
Start > Run > chkdsk

or chkdsk /f will run the next time the PC is started. /f is the switch that
automatically fixes the errors it finds.

computer and then you go to file and then you go to propties and then you

This is *not* scandisk. Like all other versions of Windows NT, Windows NT
has no program called scandisk, which is a Windows 9X utility.

The XP (and other NT versions) equivalent is called chkdsk. You can get to
it in several different ways, but the most direct is by typing CHKDSK at the
Start | Run line.
