WinXP doesn't have scandisk. Use chkdsk.

Hi Andy,

As Frank stated, there is no scandisk. NT-based systems use chkdsk. Right
click the drive in Windows Explorer, select properties. On the tools tab you
will find a section for error checking - this is the tool you are looking
for.

You can also run it from a command prompt. Click start/run or hit the
Winkey+r to open a run box, type CMD and click ok. From the prompt run
CHKDSK /? for the syntax and parameters. Note that for checks that include
more than just the file system (such as /f and /r) you will need to dismount
the drive being checked. If this is the system drive, the disk checker will
schedule to be run on the next system reboot as it cannot be dismounted
while Windows is running.

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the WinNT/2K
OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk," which performs
much better.

Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.
