Scan disk error message

What would cause the following error message when trying
to run scandisk on a USB 120 Gig hard drive? "Windows was
unable to complete the check"

Also, when trying to format the drive I get "Windows was
unable to complete the format"

I would go to the manufacturer of the hd's website and see if you can
download a diagnostic utility.

It couldn't run scandisk because scandisk doesn't exist in XP.
Scandisk has never existed in any NT architecture OS.

Also, when trying to format the drive I get "Windows was
unable to complete the format"

You can't format your system drive while XP is running. How can
Format format the drive that contains the program Format?
