Okay Mike, what is most likely happening is there is some program
running in memory while you're trying to do these things. You need to
shut down all programs which run continuously, things like Rambooster,
or virus programs. Once they are shut down you run scan disk or whatever
and they should be okay as long as you don't try to use the machine
while they're doing their job. (I think the problem is they notice a
change in the swapfile or something, which happens when progs are
running)

Are you using Windows 98 or Windows XP?

regarless of what os you are using, diag tools like scandisk and defrag will
only work properly in safe mode....... by the way you press "F8" before you
get tohe loading windows screen.

Reason, oh there is a new dit of data, i better start scandisk over again

Um, wrong.

Scandisk DOES NOT EXIST in ANY NT architecture OS, hence it doesn't
operate in any mode, safe or whatever.

Oh, and chkdsk works fine when the computer is NOT in safe mode.
Granted, it won't do a full run-through on your system drive until you
restart, but you aren't in Safe Mode then either.

BTW, thanks for the the intel on how to start Safe Mode. Of course,
it's not the only way to do that.

ps. Defrag works just fine if you're not in safe mode. Just turn off
your screen saver and you should avoid 99.9% of the reasons defrag
restarts.
