I'm new to the Small Business Server 2000 enviroment, so
I'm needing a little help. My client PC's (XP) on the
domain continually have to recoonect all mapped drives
after Log-in, Restart or Reboot. Is this just part of the
game or is there something I need to adjust somewhere?

I would appreciate anybody's help....
Thanks,
Mayes

Check the ipconfig/all on the clients. Does everything point to the
server-IP? How many nic in the SBS?

I have a similar problem with a W2K SP4 server. It only
has 1 NIC, static IP, and all my XP Pro workstations (some
are static and some are dynamic) regardless of the NIC
brnad (Broadcom or Intel) all drop thier mapped drive if
the PC's are left on overnite. I diabled the power save
on all the nic's and it still does it. I haven't found a
solution yet. The Win98 machines don't seem to do it.

Do they really loose the connection to the mapped drives, or do you just see
a red sign but as soon as you click that drive, it is alive?

Are the computers going into stand-by or hibernation? This is not the same
as the NICs temporarily disabling themselves.

No, I've disabled stanby & hibernation modes on all XP's.
I have already instructed all users to log-off at the end-
of-day as well. I've seen some mention from other
messages about log-on scripts. Is this something I need
to research?

Thanks,
Mayes

Well. I guess both. If you try to retrieve files from one
of the mapped drives w/o reconnecting, I get an error
message that cannot connect to mapped drive. However, I
can dbl click on drive in My Computer and reconnect
quickly.

Any guesses?
Thanks,
Mayes

Yes, everyone points to the server. We use static IP's.
The server has one nic.

any guesses?
Thanks,
Mayes

BTW: is really recommended that you use 2 nics in the server. How exactly
are you connecting to the internet?
Go to www.smallbizserver.net, workstations, and have a look for some issues
with XP (I get an error when I want to safe an Office file).

Why do you need 2 nics? One for network traffic and one
for internet traffic? Both of my clients with this problem
are connected to the internet via a DSL Router which
performs DHCP, so 2 NIC's won't make any difference right?
Unless it is best to have 2 NIC's on the server so they
can handle to network load better...

SBS would be much happier if it can run DHCP-server. Also, ISA 2000 will be
working fully with 2 nics, which it won't do right now. And ISA 2000 is a
great firewall.
