Hello all, I really need some help. My network runs SBS 2000 with the
16GB mail limit. Users get TONS of email, and want to keep them all.
What advice would you offer? Upgrade to SBS 2003 with a 75 GB limit,
That's one way,...upgrades to 2003 are good if you want to do that.
and put restrictions on the mailbox?
That's what I do. It doesn't matter how much space you give them, they will
hit the limit. Users never delete anything until they are forced to. Also
consider that file attachments count against the size of the mailbox. They
could easily fill up a mailbox with one message given half a chance.
Or SBS 2003 with a mail archiver program as well?
Use the Personal Folders in Outlook. You can make it the delivery
point,..or just keep the delivery point like it is but have the user
drag&drop messages they want to keep long-term into either the Inbox of the
Personal Folders or into a folder they create themselves within the Personal
Folders tree. Just remember that the Personal Folders is local to their
machine,...their machine gets trashed the Personal Folders file may get
trashed with it.
I use a combination of the second and third options. All of them have
mailbox limits set,...but only ones that really really need it have the
Personal Folders added. We still run Exchange 2000 right now.
You *don't* want to hit the database limit. A friend of mine is an ISP that
ran Exchange and had that happen,...it was a really big mess to clean up.
