While trying to setup a machine with SBS2000 as an
additional domain controller in my existing domain, I
receive the following error:
Heading: Small Business Server Limit
Body: The operation failed with the following error:
The Small Business Server computer must be the
root of the domain.

What do I need to do to allow this machine to join my
existing domain.

You cannot join an SBS server to an existing domain. This is a limitation of
SBS. As the error message suggests, an SBS server must be installed as a
forest root domain in a new forest.

Well, you can, but not as an additional DC, _that_ is the
limitation.
Member server as if a vanilla Win2k server box will work.

You can't 'upgrade' from SBS to regular old Windows 2000 Server/AD - but you
can migrate. They've made it easier than in the old days. I can't remember
the link to the KB article(s), but if you post to
microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000 they may be able to help.
