says program won't run in Windows NT - but I have Win XP!

What's up? I try to reinstall Directx 8 and the program says "This program is not designed for use on Windows NT.
Problem is I DON"T HAVE WINDOWS NT! I have windows XP Home Edition. Is there something triggering this install to think I am on windows NT?
 
XP is NT version 5.

there something triggering this install to think I am on windows NT?
 
DirectX or your computer is "confused". I don't know why. XP is just
the newest version of NT. It's supposed to work.

In any event, the current version of DirectX is 9.0b. Perhaps to work
this problem most effectively, abandon DirectX 8 and download and
install DirectX 9.0b.
