hi Group

question on saving.

I am getting a new office PC and I want to transfer all my email settings
(folders and all) to the new PC. In simple terms. I want my OE on my new
PC to look exactly as it is on my old PC.

Can I do this?

any help is appreciated.

Kevin,

Outlook express is on XP machines. Windows mail is on Vista machines. They
are not the same. If your new PC has Vista then it will not look exactly the
same as your old machine.

As you've been told, Vista includes Windows Mail, rather than Outlook
Express. While the differences between the two seem largely cosmetic to
me (I've used Thunderbird for years, and don't care for Microsoft's
email/newsreader products), the two applications are different, and will
look different.

For everything else, the Windows Easy Transfer utility should enable
you to transfer your data files and settings from the old computer to
the new one. It should even translate most of your OE settings to the
new Windows Mail.

Within the limitation that you have to use Windows Mail on the Vista
machine (not OE) and that there are some differences, you can roughly
do it.

Put the OE files on a CD, network, or flash drive. Move them to the
new machine. Start Windows Mail and use File->Import to bring the old
messages and addresses in.

There are differences, such as losing all your "groups" in the address
book - all addresses come in at the same level AFAIR.

I don't recall specifically if the OE folders are preserved but I
believe they are. Give it a shot.

I don't think there's any way to import mail filter rules and such
into Windows Mail. You can export them out of OE, but I never tried to
import them (gave up on Windows Mail long before I got the that
point).
