why is it that when I go to save a workbook, excel offers to stick it in
some bizare folder in user/data/identity/temp/ iecontent/blah blah

the folder is then labeled with mysterious digits and letters... I never
choose to put it there but this strange place exists... don't really know
why .
thanks
Dave

thanks I have excel 2000 ( 9.0 ).
and that doesn't work for me apparently, because the folder offered in the
tools area you mention is still completely different from the one that
comes up when i click "save as"
any other ideas?
thanks

Dave,
Are the excel files sent to you by email? If so this sounds like the sort
of directory that the email program would save the files to when they are
opened. There may be a setting in your email program which you can change.

as a matter of fact, you are right.
these particular files are sent to me from other users.
My "own" files don't exibit this behavior.
I will look into that.
thanks

Hi D!

As a matter of security, my inclination is to copy from an email to a
temporary location on my hard drive and to only open the file once
I've updated my virus definitions and scanned the file in question.

good plan probably... these files I get are from co-workers, but none the
less should probably be checked.

Hi D!

Can you get AIDS from your co-workers? Even more likely is the
prospect of getting virus / worms. One of the more difficult problems
we face today is when Fred connects his laptop from home to our
network and starts sending files created at home. My work system is
more likely to be a source of infections than my home one; it was
certainly hit by several attacks in the last year that my home system
was fully protected against. But....(fingers crossed, sitting paranoid
behind updated virus protection, a good firewall, Adaware and a Popup
stopper).
