Saving Settings Takes Too Long

Before the shutdown screen there is a blue screen saying that my
settings are being saved. For the past few weeks it has been taking
three minutes or so to finish. What settings could it be saving?
Could it be Firefox3's fault? Usually the shutdown screen, after it,
only takes a few seconds. I've done a registry scrub and installed
CCleaner but they don't help.

Are you using XP SP3 (the latest service pack) or some earlier version? This
might possibly be relevant.

Anyway, one suggestion for you is to try the User Profile Hive Cleanup
Service. No, I haven't a clue what it means, but it can help.

A registry doesn't need cleaning and certainly not "scrubbing". That
won't solve your problem but it can create lots of new problems.

What you are experiencing is common and probably the result of
applications not allowing Windows to shut down properly.

You do close all open applications before shutting down, right?

You are 100% free of any form of malware, correct?

Automatic Updates are not set to install at shutdown, yes?

The User Profile Hive Cleanup Service is an effective work-around:

The included ReadeMe explains the cause in detail and offers a couple of
solutions.

I installed it and I notice a UPHC.exe in the processes list. But it
certainly hasn't fixed the problem. There doesn't seem to be a log
file in the UPHClean directory, just a readme and the .exe file. Any
other suggestions? I do have Service Pack 3 installed. I close all
open windows at shutdown time but I leave stuff in the status bar,
like the anti-virus software, open. Thanks.

The ReadMe explains a procedure for tracking which process is causing
the slowdown.

I took a wild guess and shutdown the Zone Alarm Security Suite before
I shutdown the computer. Then saving settings and shutdown took only
a few seconds each. That program has always been a nuisance. Thanks.

I just contacted Zone Alarm and they said they have had this issue
with Version 8 or their security suite. They recommended reverting to
Version 7 until the former is fixed.

That sounds like Zone Alarm, alright. Most of their tech support is
"reinstall the product" or "revert to the previous version."
