Lately when I shut down my computer the screen that
says "saving settings" hangs for a very long time. It
seems to be taking anywhere from 2-3 minutes where it used
to take less than 20 sec. The profile is only 5 MB so it
is not too large.

Have you recently added any new software? I upgraded my Paperport to
version 9 last week and my shut down time has been over 1 minute since.
Last night I removed the PPTD40NT.EXE driver (a Paperport driver) prior
to shut down and found my shut down time back to under 10 seconds. The
driver is taking a long time to close. It's not hanging, but still
annoying.

You can randomly select known software drivers and shut down a different
one each evening until you find the driver that is hanging. Or you can
download a msconfig that works for w2k and stop the drivers from loading
on startup but that may interfere with your work in the particular
program.

Often this problem is caused by hotfix Q329170.
Uninstalling that hotfix usually alleviates the slow
shutdown. If the hotfix isn't installed, or can't be
uninstalled, the problem may be corrected by stopping the
print spooler prior to shutting down the system. Try
entering "NET STOP SPOOLER" in a CMD box before you shut
down. If that works, you can automate the process by
adding the command to a logoff script using the Group
Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).
