the location im trying to save to is desktop.
i see no files with a red X.
all files play fine in movie playback.

The error you are receiving indicates that your
project may be too complex or one or more of
your source files are corrupted or incompatible.

Many formats are reportedly compatible with
Movie Maker but the most reliable choices are:

Photos - bmp
Video - wmv or dv-avi
Music - wmv, wma, wav

Have a look at the following article:

A 30 min movie will be big. It may be larger than 2 GB. NTFS, the default
WXP file system, can handle these large files. Some people purposely format
their drives using FAT32, which typically won't handle a file larger than
2GB. You might check the file system of the drive on which the desktop
folder resides.
