saving pictures - file types

I've just noticed that whenever I try to "save picture
as" from my web browser it automatically saves as a .bmp
file, regardless of what type of file it was originally.
I can't work out why, nor how to get around it, and I
have no idea how to fix it. Can anyone suggest what the
problem might be? Thanks so much!
