While my photos are in JPEG and I open it up on my editor, I change it to
TIFF when I am finished with it. I will place it either in My Brief Case or
My Pictures.

Both icons for the JPEG and the TIFF are the same. How can I distinguish one
from the other.

I had and old computer with XP SP2 and I did not have thins prblems. and I
Just bought my present one the problem started.

I guess you are saving the file as a TIFF
and not just renaming from .jpg to .tif?

The icon for various files can be changed
by opening a folder and going to...

Tools / Folder Options / File Types tab...
Scroll down and select, TIFF...
Advanced button / Change Icon button.

Perhaps Explorer in your new computer has been configured to leave off the
file extensions. If so, you should change the behavior of Explorer.

I tried it and i guess that is one way of getting around it. But what I was
saying is that once i finished editing, I would save as TIFF and it would
automaticaly be saved with a different icon. And at the same time it would
settle right next to the JPEG iron in MY Brief CAse or MY pictures folders.
being that it had the same name but different format. So, it was done
automatically.

You need a scanner that has a transparency
adapter. Once you have the negatives scanned
and saved in a folder on your hard drive. You
can burn them to CDs and/or print them just like
any other digital image.

Have a look at the folowing article:

How to scan negatives and transparencies
