I made a movie in Movie Maker (XP) and saved it on to a memory stick. It saves it as a Windows Media Player file which can be read and played on other computers, but not edited. Is there a way to save the project to work on it on another computer that has the same software?

You need to use a copy of the project file, not the finished video.
