Saving movie problems, even after reading PapaJohn's stuff

Alright, I've got a problem with saving the movie file as an DV-AVI. The
file is almost 2 hours long (I know it's long). However, I thought I had
enough RAM and CPU for the job.

I'm running a Dell 8300, 3.2 Ghz Extreme Edition, 1 GB SDRAM, 120 GB
Primary HD, 300 GB Hitachi Deskstar Secondary HD. The file stopped
responding 3 times, anywhere within the 95 to 97 percent finished range. The
estimated completion time always is 310 (i think) minutes.

After reading the stuff here and at PapaJohn's site (and the DV site) I've
adjusted the page file to max (forgot actual number). Also my Commit Charge
(K) in the Task Manager is at:
Total: 574264, Limit: 4095876, Peak, 646056, so I should have MORE than
enough memory. CPU usage very rarely goes up towards 89 percent and is
generally in the 55 to 60 percent range.

The only thing I haven't tried is breaking up the parts of the movie. I
don't know how many transitions and effects I've made, but they're many. Is
there any other thing except having to break it up that I still need to do?
Any help would be much appreciated. The other smaller files I've saved
worked fine. I'm not running out of memory.
Thanks,
Larry B.

You don't mention free disc space... 2hrs is about 25 GB for a DV-AVI file,
and you need the same amount for temp space... so 50 total needed.

Is your temp storage space on a drive with enough room? if not, change it in
MM2 > Tools > Options.

Can you render the whole project so a WMV format like a pocket PC... for a
quick render... to be sure you're running into problem source file?

Sorry, first, yes, I've got 120 GB of free space on the secondary drive, and
50 free on the first. But I'm using the second HD for the temp storage space.
I just tried it for a third time and everything was rendering fine. I paid
attention to the Task Manager Performance Screen and, again, RIGHT AT 95
percent with 17 minutes left.... 55 percent CPU usage, then FLATLINE_________
2 percent for sys idle!!!! ARRRGH. Then the "MM has encountered an error
and needs to close, sorry for the inconvenience." Thanks for being so kind
Microsoft :)
I'm going to try and render it in something small to verify that it's a
problem source file.. Thanks for the tip. To be continued....

Sorry, it didn't save my text! Here goes again:
It worked this time saving as WMV for Pocket PC. However, again right at 95
percent the CPU load went from 60 % to almost 0. It hung for a few seconds
then brought the video back to life and completed it. I don't get it.
Here's what I'm thinking at this point:
The video is divided into two sections, the first part is the video captured
from a Sony Digital 8. The second part are several photos taken during the
same dates as when I was filming. Each photo at that point is inserted
almost as a clip into itself complete with effects and transitions, and even
a song inserted into the timeline during playback of the slideshow. Could it
be that the slideshow created within the storyline is causing the CPU to drop
off when saving to DV-AVI? I'm going to cut it into two parts now to find
out. I'm saving just the movie right now. We'll see if there's any hang.
I'm almost beginning to lose hope in MM! And I thought it was such a cool
app!

Also, in the Windows Event Viewer, i get the following text in the Error
messages:

Faulting application moviemk.exe, version 2.1.4026.0, faulting module
qdv.dll, version 6.5.2600.2180, fault address 0x0000aad5.

Then another error: Fault bucket 129654624.

Then another: Faulting application drwtsn32.exe, version 5.1.2600.0,
faulting module dbghelp.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x0001295d.

Then this: Hanging application moviemk.exe, version 2.1.4026.0, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

AND finally, this: Fault bucket 115810024.

Don't know if you know what that means, I'm figuring Movie Maker got hung up
somehow, along with Dr. Watson, which I'm not very familiar with other than
it's something in Windows.

I don't know if that can help anyone identify what's happening.

The rendering is a CPU intensive process, using 100% as it goes along... the
fall off in CPU usage would mean the rendering is done. It goes first to a
temporaey file....

After that it takes the contents of the temporary file and moves it to the
permanent one, the one you specified. That's not CPU intensive, but needs to
finish before the whole process is over. If the temp file is on one drive
and the finished one on another, it could be an issue with the drives...

could be a codec problem with one of your audio files (near the end of the
movie) or it is not uncommon to have it hang on a particular photo or
transition. personally I've never had alot of success in working with
DV-AVI (I know, I know... everyone says to use this for the quality) but I
have much less trouble, and takes much less space to save as the high
quality .wmv (2.1)
Nero and MyDvd both work great with these files and I really don't notice
much difference in the final quality of the DVD.

That was the question in my mind just before I got to your post. :-)

But I hadn't thought about the 2 drives thing.
jd, you said your using the secondary drive for the temp files but are you
also using it for the completed file?
If not that could very well be the problem. You will find that WMM does the
job much faster if the temp and final destinations are on the same drive.

I'm sorry, more and more things you guys bring up keep narrowing it down. I
appreciate your fast responses and support.

Firstly, I use only NTFS, so FAT32 is not an issue.
Secondly, I initially used two different drives, one as the temp, the other
as the final, to render the project. The last time it failed I used BOTH the
temp and the final DV-Avi file on the same drive, still same prob. I'm
currently trying AGAIN, this time I cut out the entire photo slideshow part.
It said it would take more than 350 minutes to complete. Whew! I went
grocery shopping and came back only to notice I forgot to turn off my TV
Tuner's scheduling agent. It was recording through the tuner's encoder to
the hard drive, but when I shut it down I noticed it was hardly taking up any
RAM or CPU muscle (probably b/c the encoder's built into the tuner and not
using sys resources).

I'm thinking it might be a codec prob, but we'll see. I've got most of the
current codecs installed already. Dunno....

If splitting the file doesn't work, I will try using the "high quality" wmv,
but I was hoping to use dv-avi. I spent a buttload on my computer for this
very thing (oh, and to kill lots of aliens in Half-Life 2 of course!), and I
figure I should get the best out of it.
....keeping my fingers crossed!

Alright, after countless hours of retrying, it finally worked! There must
have been something wrong with the pictures and their transitions because the
nearly 1 hr 45 minutes of video clips rendered beautifully! I can't even
believe the video came off of a High 8 tape! The dv-avi file looks superb!
(I did a "pass through" of the High 8 tape using my Digital 8 Camcorder.)
Now to find out where the slideshow portion takes a dump! Oh well, I won't
sweat that one. I can always use photostory and import something like that
later. My RAM always stayed well above the peak. Now I'll use NERO to burn
it to DVD.

THIS FORUM HAS TAUGHT ME A HECKUVA LOT IN THE PAST DAY. A big thanks to
everyone, especially Papajohn and his cool website for helping us newbies to
MovieMaker out!
