True...some DVD players will not play a VCD.

There doesn't seem to be an option for writing directly
to DVD or for exporting in a form the DVD writer can
read from my hard disc. I've tried the 'export to dv cam'
option and it's crap. Any suggestions?

Movie Maker can save as .wmv or .avi...
you need authoring software that can import
those formats.
