Saving .mdb files to backup disk

Much of the tracking performed in my job is done in
Access; therefore, I do weekly backups of these .mdb
files. Unfortunately, when saved to a CD-RW disk, they
are saved in a read-only format. I don't have this
problem with Word or Excel documents, only Access
documents. It appears that during the save process, the
writeable file is converted to a read-only file when
stored on a disk. When I try to unmark the Read-Only
marker in Properties, I get an error message. I need to
be able to retrieve a writeable version of the .mdb file,
not a read-only version. If something does every happen
to my computer files, I will need a writable .mdb file,
not a read-only file.

Thank you for your time.

You shouldn't try to remove the read-only attribute of the file on the CD.

Instead copy it to your hard drive, and remove the read-only on that copy.

Thank you for your response.

I am in fact copying the original from my harddrive and
it is not marked as read-only; it's during the copying
process that Windows or the copying program converts the
copy written to my disk into a read-only format. I don't
know why it does this.

Again thanks for your assistance.

Usually, when you copy a file to a CD, it becomes read-only. You cannot
change this attribute on the CD. When you then copy it from the CD to your
hard-drive, that copy will also be read only. Once it's on your hard drive,
right-click it and remove the readonly attribute.

Hi Todd,

Thank you for responding.

Unfortunately, I've tried that solution several times.
When I pull up the saved version on my CD/RW backup disk,
unmark the Read-only box and hit "Apply" or "OK," I get
an error message. It states "An error occurred applying
attributes to the file," it gives the file path and then
states, "Access is denied." Just to reiterate the
original on my computer hard drive is not marked as read-
only, but appears to convert to read-only when I save it
to my CD/RW backup disk.

Thanks much for your help in this. I'm truly at a loss.

Todd

Todd, you can't change the attribute *on the CD*. You must first copy the
file from the CD to your hard drive, and change the attribute on the hard
drive copy.

Thank you, Joan; and thanks to Eric as well. You were
both correct. I was able to do just as you explained.
It just didn't make sense to me that it would work this
way given that this doesn't occur with word and excel
documents.

Again, thanks. You probably saved me months of turmoil.

Todd
