Hi again

Sorry to be a pest but i am still confused.

The file size for a 30 min video in the dvi format is 4880mb, that means it
wont fit on a cd (or anywhere near).

I have a few films on vcd which are about an hour long and play fine on the
dvd player (in terms of quality). They are mpeg files, can i pick a format
which is similar to this so i can fit a reasonable amount on the disc.

Its all so confusing ; )

thanks

Gary

Hi there,

OK, well if saving to a CD is a must then something will have to go.
Your options are :

1) Reduce image size but keep quality
2) Reduce quality but keep image size
3) Reduce both image quality & size
4) Give up and shout at it loudly
5) Use a third party program to squeeze the data a lot so that it will fit

Option's 1, 2 and 3......

You can use the pre-set options in Movie Maker to achieve this, or, you
can download the free Microsoft Windows Media Encoder to do the job. The
encode seems to give a better result I always think.

Option 4.....
I do a good line in 2 and 4lb lump hammers as an accessory to this
option...it depends how you feel at the time I suppose but I think the 4lb
hammer would be the best.

Option 5.....
I have never ventured down this route other than to use Dazzle DVD
Complete. I do know that the DivX format is highly regarded by one and all.
You would have to do a search to find the specific web-site. There is a
warning though if you go the DivX route. One of the codecs that Movie Maker
does not get along with is.......the one for DivX. So it MAY cause you
problems, but as you have probably heard I wrote a program called "Rename
Codecs" that deals with it on a temporary basis. See the website for further
info.

Hope that helps a bit.

Hi Again,

I should have also mentioned getting an MPeg codec to use with Movie Maker.
I know that generally they do not work well with Movie Maker, but the ones
on my system do not affect it at all...so its hard to decide which thought
is the correct one.

In general, MPEG codecs are copywrited and to use one legely you have to
buy it...but I hear that there is a free one here is the link

<http://www.motiwala.com/ympeg.htm>
- a freeware, highly rated MPEG codec.

I have no idea whether it is any good or whether it will mess Movie Maker
up.

Hope this helps further.

Are you wanting to save the file in DV format, or create a VCD of it?
If it's the latter, the size of the file doesn't matter - it will be
converted to MPEG before it's written to disc.

Hi

Thnaks for reply.

I didnt know there was a difference but a VCD will do for now. Just
something of half decent quality to play on the DVD palyer. I normally use
nero 5 which supports VCD. Guess i will just have to experiment a little.

I am thinking of buying a DVD writer though. Do these compress during the
burn process too because the movie i have is only 30 mins long and would
almost fill a disc but the discs from the shops hold a lot more film than
that.

Does anyone know of a link i can get some basic info on video files cos i
think i need some ; ).

many thanks

Hi there,

I maybe wrong, but as far as I know you don't. But, I expect you can use
it in Windows Media Encoder and certainly similar programs where you would
take the very best output you can get from Movie Maker and feed it into the
converter and get an MPEG file out the other end. I have never tried it
myself mostly because I have not needed to. I feed my finished DV-AVI
straight into Dazzle DVD Complete which converts it to MPEG before you can
do anything else with it.

Eeyore,

Getting an MPEG2 codec to work with MM2 would only be for importing and
using MPEG2 files in projects. It wouldn't offer you the option of saving a
movie in MPEG format. For that you need other software.

For the highest quality MPEG files, consider using TMPGEnc. It's a free
download and its MPEG2 codec can be used for a trial 30 day period.

There are links on my DVD > Intro page to download the utility and to a
tutorial about configuring it, if you want to do better than the default
settings.
