saving filtered worksheets

Can someone explain how I can save a filtered worksheet after I have filtered the master list. I have excel '97 and it will save the whole workbook, not the filter only. For example; my master worksheet contains 2 yrs of data and I want to filter the 2 yrs by yr and save to new file. Please help, this shouldn't be so hard.
 
You can copy/paste the visible cells only to another sheet and save that
sheet as a file.
