Very simple question but I can't find it in Help or MS on-line.

When you are downloading a file how do you get it to "ask to download or
open" and to specify the location to save.

Thanks.

Try Tools_Internet Options_Security(tab)_Internet.
Select Custom Level, scroll down to Downloads and enable
File Download.

Good Luck.

Two things here:
1) control panel>IE Options>advanced tab>scroll down to browsing>check
"notify when downloads complete">apply>OK out.

2) Start>Settings>folder options>File types>scroll to the file types in
question>click to highlight it>click edit>check box which says "confirm open
after download" (I know that doesn't make sense; because you want it before
download, but that is what you do)>OK>apply>OK out.

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.
