Saving files over Terminal Server

Greetings,

My company uses terminal server so our shops can connect
to our server and process reports on our custom software.
Typically when a shop runs a report they use PDFWriter as
their default printer and save the report to their
terminal server desktop then email the report back to
themselves (these shops are throughout Alberta,
Saskatchewan and the US). However just yesterday one of
our shops in Texas was able to run reports and somehow
save them directly to his laptop. How is this possible?

Essentially he had PDFWriter set as his default printer
on his laptop and it was also set as default in terminal
server. Apparently when he chose, through our custom
software, to save the report as a file it showed the
contents of his 'My Documents' in the drop-down Save As
menu. He had a witness to it yesterday but was unable to
do the same today.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Windows Server 2003 supports local drive redirection, so if that's what you're using and you didn't modify the default behaviour this option is configurable by the client
If this is Windows 2000 TS this option is only available via resource kit utility which I think you'd remember installing

Is this possible without using a VPN connection? I think
the user was 'printing' the document to his mapped
PDFWriter which I guess would allow him to save locally
to his laptop.

Thanks for the reply. It's good to know it is supported
in 2003 as I believe we are upgrading this summer.

Yes it's possible & secure to do this in 2003 w/o VPN, but not in 2000. I doubt the person's local PDFWriter was redirected to their RDP Session, unless you have Adobe Acrobat (not Acrobat Reader) installed on the TS. Check this for TS Printing FAQs
