Hello,

Since this morning, I have been experiencing a problem
with saving files to remote shared drives on LAN.
(Until yesterday, I had had no problem at all.)
Any information/suggestion to solve this would be
appreciated.

(LAN)
Machine A - Windows XP Home (also a gateway to Broadband)
Machine B - Windows XP Home (ICS and File/Printer sharing
working OK)
Machine C - Windows 98 SE (ICS and File/Printer sharing
working OK)

(Problem)
(1) The problem occurs when using Paint or Notepad on
Machine A or B (i.e. Windows XP Home).
(2) When I select "Save As" and choose a shared drive of
Machine A or B from "My Network Places", the following
message appears;
"Problem with Shortcut: The drive or network connection
that the shortcut "target.lnk" refers to is unavailable.
Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the
network resources is available, and then try again."
(3) If I click "OK", however, the selected remote drive is
displayed and I can save the file.

(Note)
(1) When using "My Computer" or "My Network Places" from
the desktop, I have no problem with accessing to the
remoted shared drives.
(2) If I use Excel or Word, the above problem does not
occur.

I have this problem as well... it appears to be the exact same as
yours. It works fine with Word and such, but not with SQL Server Query
Analyzer and other apps. I have tried deleting all my Network Places
and let them recreate themselves, but they still have the problem. Any
solution?

Ditto, same problem, new with windows xp sp1.

Me too on my XP Pro desktop machine, using IE/Paint/Notepad/CoolEdit
Pro/Photoshop. Word works ok.

Interestingly, on my XP Pro laptop, which I notice needs a bunch of
updates, the problem doesn't occur. I'm going to image the OS drive
now, then install the updates one by one and see what happens.

BTW I'm running Samba (v2.2.3a-12.3, Debian Linux) as the filesever.
