Saving Data?

I have windows xp w/spc 2 . I am sorta new, and need to know if I am
doing this right. I have been making data cds and dvds since I first
got my pc because I thought it would be the right way to ensure I will
be able to replace stuff if I ever need to, or if I get another
computer. I have quite a large number of pictures, movies, music, etc.
and really don't want to lose this. If this is wrong, please help me
out, and tell me what to do!! And if it is right, let me know!! When
you are not sure of something, like I am most of the time, since I have
no training at all, you really don't want to foul up ---

As long as you're using good quality CD-R and DVD-R media, and as
long as you're not using any packet writing to back up your data,
you're doing fine.

(If you use poor quality back-up media, your data may become
unrecoverable after a period of time. If you're using packet
writing software, your data may be unreadable on another system.)

I don't know what packet writing software is, and I always use Memorex
cds and dvds. As I said, there is an awful lot I need to learn, and I
always appreciate it when someone takes the time to keep me out of
trouble. Would you mind to tell me what you mean, so I will not use
any of them by mistake? Thanks!

Thanks --it looks like I've got some reading to do --I wanted to tell
you that I use Nero to make these disks -either Nero Express or
burning rom. It is not hard to do , and I will study the articles you
recommended..again, I appreciate your help.

I think your burning software is all right then as long as you're
not using the IN-CD feature (I think that's what it's called -
can't remember) which is Nero's packet writer. If you're burning
disc-at-once data disks, you're burning the best sort of data
disks since they can be read by any other system.

The media is another story, and it can get confusing to figure
out what to buy. I had a bookmark to a good media list, but the
link I gave you looks all right. I think DVDDecrypter can
identify the make of the media you buy.
