Help, an old pal told me once that he could save large amounts of data on a
DVD Disk, I've lost touch since but having aquired a DVD writer I'm keen to
try this out can anyone tell me if this is possible or was he just kidding
me.

Yes, it's possible. You'll want to use DVD burning software to take full
advantage of the amount of space that's available (XP's burning feature is
designed for CDs, not DVDs). Most DVD writers include burning software in
the box. Or third party programs can be acquired separately - such as the
Ahead collection (Nero, InCD, etc).

Yes it is possible, i use DVDs for backup all the time. You do need burning
software though, such as Nero or Roxio. Personally I prefer Roxio.
Obviously you can burn your data the same way as you would a music CD but,
if you want to constantly update your data, it is better to use the UDF
format and then use either Nero's InCD or Roxio's Drag to Disk. This makes
the DVD or CD act just like a floppy, so you can add things to the disk
and/or delete them. Nero InCD is bundled with the Nero software and Roxio
Drag to disk is bundled with Roxio software.
