saving contacts before formatting hard drive

I formatted my hard drive and probably should have
researched how to save everything more thoroughly, so
please keep the sarcasm to a minimum. I attempted to send
to myself all of my contacts so that when I opened my mail
after getting my computer running again they would be
right there. WRONG!! When I attempt to view the
addresses they have an extension of .xnk. When I attempt
to open I get the message "Unable to open Outlook window.
Unable to display the folder. Could not open the item.
Try again." Can anyone save my day? I am using win98se
with outlook 2000.

What exactly did you send to yourself and how?

The file you needed to back up is your Personal Folders file (*.pst) It's
where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm

I selected all of the contacts in my address book and
pasted them in an email. The site you suggested probably
will help me "next" time. Does anyone have suggestions
with my current situation or am I just up a "crick"?

You still haven't told us anything. Pasted them where? In the body of the
message? As vCards? As Outlook Items? As Something else?

Maybe I was mistaken, I thought this was a newsgroup that
offered help from our peers. I have stated previously
that I copied them, in whatever format that might be in an
email message. When I opened the mail the extension
was .xnk which I included in my first posting. If someone
would just please offer a little advice with a "little"
compassion for a non-computer geek it would be greatly
appreciated. Russ, I am sorry I apparently am not at the
same level of competency as you are on a computer. Try to
have a little patience, please.

Sorry. I just can't figure out what you did from your posts so far, so I
have no way to figure out if you created any data that can be recovered.
Perhaps if you listed the exact steps you used, I can figure out the rest.
Contacts are not stored in an address book, so when you said you copied and
posted from your address book, I have no idea what that means.

I opened my contacts list, selected all using ctrl+A keys
and copied and pasted them into an email. Before sending
the email I tried to open them and they appeared to open
properly. I am guessing that is because they were still
present on my hard drive. I can't think of anything else
to describe what I did. I was hoping telling what the
extension of the sent files would be enough for someone
experience with this would help. Thanks for the attempt
to help.

By Contacts List, do you mean your Contacts Folder or your Address Book? If
it is the latter, I'm afraid you didn't save any information.
Do you still have access to your original PST file?
